On Saturday 18th March, the finals of the Reg Gregory Trophy for 2016 was played between the top eight players who had accumulated the most points for club competitions during the year 2016. As always, a ‘best of three-game singles’ matches were played in a Quarter-final, Semi-final and Final to establish the Reg Gregory Champion.
Unfortunately, Charlie Caruana had to withdraw from the competition at the last moment, so Rachel Kelly got a Bye straight into the Semi-finals. The quarter finals were contested between Tony White and Carol Woodward (Tony winning 2-0), Sue Sutton and Hannah Griffin (Hannah winning 2-0 in a closely contested match), and Glen Woodward and David Sutton (Glen winning 2-0). In the Semi finals, Glen beat Hannah with a two-game win (13-3 and 13-4), and Rachel beat Tony (13-10 and 13-5).
The final between Rachel and Glen was the only match which extended to three games with Rachel beating Glen in the final singles match in a closely contested game. Well done to Rachel for winning the Reg Gregory Trophy for the first time.
It was a bonus that Reg Gregory and his daughters turned up to support the event, and great to see Reg in such good spirits and looking well after his recent illness. It was great to see him, and lovely that he was there to present his prestigious trophy to Rachel.
The points for this year’s Reg Gregory Trophy will be posted on this website as and when each competition is completed.
