On one of the hottest days of the year, and with absences through holidays and other commitments, five teams took part in our Pairs Championships, in a four-game round robin with a bye in each round, the final to be between the top two scoring teams.
No team won all four games, so it was a battle between the teams scoring three wins, Richard and Brenda, and Glen and Hannah, to contest the title in the Final. Richard and Brenda played consistently well throughout the day, with Brenda’s normal excellent pointing and Richard’s fine shooting giving them a three win +30 after the first four games.
Following a 13-10 defeat against Richard and Brenda in the earlier rounds, Glen and Hannah found their form in the final to win 13-8, taking the title and the Don Crutchley trophy, together with two keepsake awards. The score did not reflect the tough battle between the two teams, with all four players demonstrating some of their best petanque skills with excellent pointing and shooting on both sides.
Tony White played with Neil Muddeman, who we are very pleased to welcome back to the club after a time away from petanque. They played well in the first two games giving them victory in both, but lost out later in the day to finish in third spot overall. Lynn and David Roberts won two out of four games, finishing in fourth spot overall and Carol Woodward and Rachel Kelly, defending their title from last year, did not find their normal standard of play and lost all four games.
It was a pleasant day’s play, and our congratulations to Glen and Hannah for winning the 2017 pairs championship.
